So this past weekend I purchased a delay pedal for my electric guitar. It basically takes the signal transmitted via the cable and lets it pass through to the amp, then a set time later it repeats the sound. This gives you a “delay” making the delayed sound plus the actual sound played by the guitar. The delayed sound can be repeated as many times as you set it for. Unfortunately the solid state amp, which I use, doesn’t handle two signals at the same time. The sound it receives gets mangled and you get interfering signals. This creates not only massive beats, but the amplitude gets cut because the solid state amp peaks when signals are combined. The distortion built into the amp is also isn’t meant for the delay signal and so the algorithm used to change the sound is slightly off. The pedal I have is the DD-3 digital delay by Boss. It’s really sweet.
